Poetry Together Community Day at Birley Fields

On Monday 4th April local parents, grandparents, carers and children took part in a fantastic free day of activities (and cake!) inspired by Poetry Together, Manchester Children’s Book Festival’s free-to-enter inter-generational poetry competition.

Local performance poet Chris Jam was MC for the day, keeping everyone on track and in high spirits. As well as workshops promoting the writing of poetry together, led by poet Mandy Coe, scientist poet Sam Illingworth and Juliette Wilson and Ed Lab students – each exploring themes as diverse as love, other languages and social issues and producing some amazing poems, young poets had the opportunity to read with Chris at the open-mic at the end. And there was cake…

Outside, on the drop-in tables, Ed Lab’s Mick Chesterman and his students had everyone feeding snippets of poetry into their Strawberry Pie machines and making robot-voiced poems, while MMU Department of English’s Martin Kratz also enthralled with his low-tec typewriter and carbon paper activity, themed around Manchester’s Peppered Moth. And there was more cake…

There’s still time to enter our Poetry Together inter-generational poetry competition. Our deadline is April 29th. Just find someone to write with (one of you needs to be over 18, one under 18) and send us your poems.

Check out the Ed Lab blog for more details about the workshops and the day and to hear some of the Robot poems!
