Nick Butterworth, the award-winning writer, illustrator and creator of Q Pootle 5 and Percy the Park Keeper, performed at the 2017 Manchester Children’s Book Festival this weekend at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Nick, best-known for his characters Percy the Park Keeper and Q Pootle 5, captivated fans, hosting two interactive storytelling sessions, exploring the power of imagination.
Nick also brought Q Pootle 5 with him to meet new friends at the Family Fun Day, much to the delight of the excited crowds.
Nick, who traveled to the Family Fun Day from Essex, said he was thrilled to have been invited to the North West: “I didn’t know about this Festival until I was invited and I’m thrilled to be here. My parents are from Lancashire and I spent many a childhood holiday there. I have a strong affinity with the North; as soon as I see the architecture, I feel a tug.”
During Nick’s sessions, he talked about how the North often features in his work, such as in his first collection of nursery rhymes BB Blacksheep and Company.
The families attending the Family Fun Day got to hear about the adventures of Nick’s characters, as well as looking at how the author created the beautiful illustrations in his books. The audience were especially delighted when naughty alien Q Pootle 5 made an unexpected appearance. As Nick said, “He’s crops up sometimes when he’s not supposed to!”
After the sessions, the children had the opportunity to have their books signed. Seven-year-old Ben Watkins, who brought his copy of The Treasure Hunt, said how much he enjoyed meeting Nick and attending the workshops.
Ben said, “I loved it. My favourite author is Roald Dahl but I also love David Walliams and Nick Butterworth. I really love Percy the Park Keeper.”
Ben’s dad praised the Family Fun Day saying, “It’s great to see kids getting excited about books.”
